Tell us about your workspace
I lived and worked in Amsterdam for almost two years. When I returned to Belgium, I temporarily moved back to my parents’ house in Houthalen, Limburg. This picture is taken in our living room. I’m all over the place and I like to switch from workspace a few times a day. Since I started working for Cake in March, during the Covid-19 lockdown, the possibilities of changing places were limited. As the measures are loosening, I’m really looking forward to working in nice coffee bars and co-working spaces.
Also, I just bought an apartment in Antwerp, so during summer it will be time to leave “Hotel Mama” (5 stars – for sure!) and start a new chapter in this vibrant city. After living in Amsterdam, I missed the big city life, and since we are also expanding to the Netherlands with Cake very soon, Antwerp is a good homebase for my meetings in the Netherlands too.
The remote working and flexibility at Cake are a real delight and I cannot imagine ever going back to my previous situation. I’m definitely not a morning person, but I used to be an early bird since I had a 1.5 hour commute at my previous job. We had fixed working hours and max 1 home working day a week was allowed. Every time I got stuck in rush hour traffic, I could only dream of a stress-free start to the day.
My typical working day now starts around 9am, after enjoying a good breakfast without any rush. When I feel unfocused or uninspired during the day, I go out for a walk and catch up in the evening when I’m at my best – even better with a glass of wine!
What do you do at Cake?
As a Business Development Manager, I am developing and implementing growth opportunities between Cake and new commercial partners.
With our Cake for Business offering, we can help companies acquire new customers, reward loyal customers or provide them with real-time market/consumer insights based on aggregated anonymized transaction data.
The nice thing about doing Business Development at Cake is that there is a B2B and B2C part. This means that I’m not only contributing to the success of Cake and delivering value to our commercial partners, but I’m also making our Cake users happy with the new partnerships that we set up. They enjoy cashbacks when they shop at their favorite brands and receive a monthly data Reward – which increases with the amount of commercial partners Tom and I bring on board.
Although Zoom meetings work perfectly fine, I really look forward to being on the road and doing in-person meetings again.
If you would like to know more about our offering for commercial partners it’s definitely worth while checking out this blogpost.
Why Cake and not another company?
After having heard about Cake several times and already being in love with the company name, I decided to take a chance and sent a quick email to Davy, our CEO, with the bold title “Your Future Business Developer”. Two minutes after, I got a message back “Time for a coffee this late afternoon maybe?”. I was hyped up and amazed by how quick on his feet Davy was. After we had coffee together, I was not only in love with the company name but I was also convinced that this was a perfect professional match. A few days later, I went for another drink with Tom, Head of Business Development, which only strengthened my initial feeling about Cake. When I got home, I received a phone call from Davy “Welcome to the Cake team – we’re ordering your car as we speak”.
Trust, flexibility, transparency, fun and winning mentality are five very important values for me and therefore also the criteria on which I select a company I want to work for. Cake ticks all the boxes and goes much further than I could’ve ever dreamed of.
One of our company values is “craft your own cubicle”, which means that our work is an integrated part of our lives that fuels our personal fulfillment and adds purpose. This is exactly how I feel since working at Cake. Every morning I wake up happy, with a feeling of flow which is pleasurable and addicting – even on weekends.
What’s your most memorable Cake moment?
Since I started working at Cake during lockdown, 2 months ago, the most memorable moments are yet to come. First of all, I’m really looking forward to finally meeting my colleagues!
Despite the fact that we have not met in person yet, I feel fully integrated and part of the Cake team. I got a warm welcome with a lot of GIFs and sweet messages from everyone. My first bi-weekly Zoom call with the team – in which we all had to dress-up – was also one to remember. I love the Cake team.
What’s your favorite cake?
This was the hardest question of them all. Don’t make me choose between cheesecake and chocolate cake.
Any topping on the Cake?
Download the Cake app and enjoy the sugar rush!
